Four steps

Wash, decontaminate, polish, protect

The order most detailers follow. Each step links to the products that do the job.

Hand washing a dark car with a foam-covered sponge

01

Wash

Snow foam first to lift the grit, then a two-bucket hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo.

Gloved hand spraying a cleaner from a trigger bottle

02

Decontaminate

Iron remover and a clay mitt take off what the wash leaves behind, so the paint feels smooth.

Dual-action polisher with a foam pad on dark paint

03

Polish

A compound and a finishing polish on a dual-action machine take out swirls and bring back depth.

Detailer buffing a grey car panel with a cloth

04

Protect

Wax for warmth or a ceramic spray for slickness: either way, water beads and rolls off.

Snow foam

Let the foam do the first wash

A thick layer of foam clings to the panels, softens the dirt and carries it down as it slides off. Rinse, then touch the paint.

Microfibre guide

The right cloth for each job

Microfibre is sold by weight in grams per square metre (gsm). Heavier cloths hold more water; short, light ones leave less lint on polish and glass.

1200 gsm (sample)

Plush drying towel

Lay it flat and pull it across the panel.

Wash on its own, no softener.

400 gsm (sample)

Edgeless buffing cloth

Wipes off wax, polish and ceramic spray.

Keep one colour for each product.

300 gsm (sample)

Short-pile cloth

Removes heavy polish residue.

Rinse before it dries hard.

Waffle weave (sample)

Glass cloth

Streak-free windows and mirrors.

Air dry or low heat.

  • Wash microfibre separately, warm and without softener (sample tip)
  • Drop it on the floor? It goes back in the wash

Questions

Before you detail

Not sure which product fits your car? Email [email protected] or call (555) 014-2864.

What order should I use the products in?

Wash, decontaminate, polish, protect. Snow foam and shampoo first, then iron remover and clay, then compound and polish, then wax or ceramic spray.

Wax or ceramic spray?

Wax gives a warm, deep look and is applied by hand; ceramic spray is quicker and feels slicker. Many people use either one on top of a polished finish.

Do I need a machine polisher?

No. You can wash, clay and protect by hand. A dual-action polisher makes swirl removal quicker and more even.

How much should I dilute the shampoo?

Safety placeholder: copy the dilution ratio and safety text from the product label and its safety data sheet.

How do I wash microfibre?

Warm, on its own and without fabric softener, then air dry or tumble on low heat (sample tip).
